WINTER HARBOR – David S. Bennett Sr., 89, of Winter Harbor and Dade City, Fla., passed away peacefully Monday, July 27, 2009, at his home in Winter Harbor. He was born Nov. 27, 1919, in Somerville, Mass., the son of Harry and Ivy (Lindsey) Bennett. David served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. He later worked at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard until 1984 as a machinist, specializing in the maintenance of nuclear submarines. He also worked at Charlestown Naval Shipyard on the reconstruction of the USS Constitution “Old Ironsides” and at Watertown Arsenal until its closing in 1976. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge, Winter Harbor. Thanks to research by Bill VanHorn, he was presented with his 50-year membership pin in 2008. David was the beloved husband of Beatrice N. (Myrick) Bennett; father of David S. Bennett Jr. and his wife, Gloria, of Templeton, Mass., and Ruth Carroll and her husband, David, of Wilmington, Mass.; grandfather of Jodi Lynn Mackie and her husband, Kevin, Brian Carroll and his wife, Heather, Kimberly Carroll, Eric Saunders, David R. Bennett and Devinne Hall and her husband, Zach; and great-grandfather of Tyler Mackie. He is also survived by his sister, Hazel Wellman; his brother, Robert Bennett and his wife, Dorothy, both of Lamoine, and Dade City, Fla.; his sister-in-law, Nell Byers of Winter Harbor; many nieces and nephews. A celebration of life will be held in his honor 1 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, at his home, 99 Sargent St., Winter Harbor.
