LUBEC and VENICE, Fla. – Arlene Small Whitney, 89, died Nov. 18, 2008, in Houston, Texas, after a long illness. She was born May 28, 1919, in Lubec, the youngest daughter of Milford and Margaret (Trecartin) Small. She had fond memories of her childhood in Lubec, where she attended Congregational Christian Church. She was a graduate of Lubec High School, Class of 1937. She married Gordon B. Whitney in 1938 and lived in the Houlton area for many years. They moved to Belmont, Mass., where Arlene worked for Brighton Co-Op Bank. Upon retirement, they moved to Venice, Fla. She moved to Houston, Texas, in 2008 to be with family. She is remembered for her attention to details and for her quick wit. She loved to travel, garden and play cards with her friends. She had a great love for animals and children and was especially attentive to her nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 54 years, Gordon Whitney; two sisters, Annie Small and Ruth Murray of Lubec; three brothers, Clarence and Harold of Lubec and Lauris of South Portland. She is survived by a nephew, Thomas Small and his wife, Pat, of Burlington, Conn.; two nieces, Lynne Trumper and her husband, Pete, of Kingwood, Texas, and Sharon Dinsmore and her husband, Del, of Lubec; many great-nieces and great-nephews, as well as many great-great-nieces and great-great-nephews. A private family memorial service was held in Lubec. She was buried beside her husband in Dixfield.
