EASTPORT – Jethro N. Matthews, 89, passed away Saturday, Aug. 8, 2009, with his family by his side at Calais Regional Hospital. Jethro was born May 29, 1920, in Eastport, son of the late Seward and Ellen (Leighton) Matthews. He was born, raised and lived most of his life at his family home on High Street, Eastport. Jethro was known as dad to his children; Matt to his Portland friends and Grey Dart to his citizens band friends. He dedicated his life to raising his three children after their mother passed away. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wife, Lois (Webb) Matthews; two brothers, Seward Matthews Jr. and Kenneth Matthews; and a daughter, Dorothy Jean Matthews. Surviving are his four sons and two daughters, John Matthews and his wife, Kim, of China, Maine, Herman Matthews of Eastport, Robert Matthews of Arizona, Richard Matthews of Portland, Ruth Avery and her husband, Larry, of Eastport and Carole Smith of Tampa, Fla.; a special granddaughter, Lily; a special sister-in-law, Zettie; numerous grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. A graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 13, at Bayside Cemetery, Eastport, with Pastor Mark Edward officiating. Arrangements by Mays Funeral Homes, Calais and Eastport.
