AUBURN – Kenneth Small, this good husband, father, brother and friend, slipped away this day, Aug. 15, 2009, with his wife by his side. Looking forward to being with his parents, brothers and sisters; and our precious daughter, Gail Small Bailey, who left this earth May 23, 2006. He lived the last years of his life in pain, dignity and grief. He was born March 13, 1926. He was the father who helped wash the dirty diapers he called “peanut butter.” He shared his wealth with us. He shared his car keys willingly, and he told it like it was for the poor choices we all made at one time or another. His only son, Terry Small’s description of his dad is “straight arrow.” In our opinion, the value of a man’s life is in the eyes of his children. He’s the guy who puts up a swing in the tallest tree. He’s the one who puts up a basketball hoop and challenges all the kids to shoot their best shot. The father who goes to the school to teach a teacher about compassion, and holds his breath as he watches his “little girl” face her world and beyond. He danced with us all to the music of his life. He leaves his wife of 61 years, Kay Small of Norway, Maine; his son, Terry Small and wife, Margaret and family, of North Carolina; one brother, Harold Small and wife, Ruth, of Tyler, Texas; several nieces and nephews; two sisters-in-law, Honey Bartlett of Newburgh, and Bebe Spencer and husband, Don, of Old Town; and all the children and animals he loved so dearly. His instructions were, “throw my ashes into the wind where I will be with you always, because I love you all so very much.” We, his family, are grateful for having him in our lives. Sail on straight arrow! There will be no funeral service at Ken’s request, instead he would tell all who loved him “No flowers for me, pass it on!” We are grateful to Hospice House, Auburn, so if you’d like to remember him, donations in Ken’s name may be made to The Hospice House of Androscoggin Homecare and Hospice, 236 Stetson Road, Auburn, ME 04210. Fortin Funeral Home, 70 Horton St., Lewiston.
