MONHEGAN ISLAND, Maine — A Coast Guard boat was called upon to help take a seriously ill man to the hospital Saturday after a LifeFlight helicopter was unable to land on Monhegan Island.
The unnamed, 40-year-old man apparently was suffering from diabetic distress. After LifeFlight could not respond due to weather and limited visibility, a Coast Guard boat from Boothbay Harbor brought a local paramedic to the island.
The paramedic and crew of the 25-foot response boat ultimately took the man to St. Andrews Hospital in Boothbay.
Coast Guard officials credited their cooperative relationship with local authorities for helping facilitate the man’s treatment.
