PALMYRA, Maine — A man walked into the Dunkin’ Donuts Wednesday night with his face covered and a knife in his hand and demanded cash, police say.

With customers inside the doughnut shop, the clerk behind the counter handed the suspect an undisclosed amount of cash and he took off on foot, Detective Lt. Carl E. Gottardi II of the Somerset County Sheriff’s Department said Thursday.

“There was more than one customer and clerks in there,” he said.

The Dunkin’ Donuts is located between Burger King in Palmyra and the Irving gas station in Newport and is known to many as the Newport Dunkin’ Donuts. The clerk who answered the phone Thursday morning even said, “Newport Dunkin’ Donuts, can I help you?”

Because of the ongoing investigation, the manager said they are not allowed to comment about the robbery, and could not release the number of clerks who were working Wednesday night or if the shop’s surveillance camera tapes were taken as evidence.

Police are asking for the public’s assistance finding the suspect, who is described as “thin, around 5 feet 9 inches to 6 feet tall, 150 pounds, wearing jeans and a sweatshirt,” Gottardi said in a statement.

Somerset County deputies got the call for help at 8:50 p.m. Wednesday and called in a detective to investigate the felony crime. Maine State Police — which included a canine used to try to track the suspect — and Newport police also assisted at the scene.

“The investigation is ongoing at this time,” Gottardi said. “Any evidence collected at the scene is under review.”

As the case progresses, additional information will be released, the investigator said.
