PORTLAND, Maine — The Maine Public Utilities Commission wants to know if a plan to cut natural gas costs by a dominant distributor in southern Maine is enough of a decrease.
Northern Utilities has asked regulators for permission to cut its winter gas rates 2.3 percent over last year, which would save a customer almost $40 over the heating season.
The move comes as wholesale natural gas prices have fallen to levels not seen in seven years. And there is a record level of gas in storage.
Northern Utilities has 52,000 customers in Maine and New Hampshire, most are in coastal York County, Greater Portland and Lewiston-Auburn.
The Portland Press Herald says the PUC is expected to rule on the case in late October.
