Eastern Maine Medical Center, the University of Maine and Kohl’s Cares for Kids Charities have joined forces to sponsor the first “Cub Tracks” Youth Triathlon for children ages 7 to 13, reports Lisa Trimper of EMMC-Community Wellness Services.
Cub Tracks Youth Triathlon begins with registration 9-10 a.m. followed by a mandatory pre-race meeting at 11 a.m. and the triathlon at noon Sunday, Sept. 27, on the Orono campus of UMaine.
The cost is $20 per child for the swim, bike and walk-run event, which will feature an appearance by Olympic gold medalist swimmer and Maine native Ian Crocker.
“Our goal is to get children physically active, have them try something new and promote healthy lifestyle habits,” Trimper said.
There is no registration deadline and children can register the day of the event, Trimper wrote.
“We will have a table set up for same-day registration but we try to encourage families to register, online, prior” to the triathlon.
For youngsters ages 7 to 9, the swim portion is 50 yards and 100 yards for those 10-13.
In the bike segment, it is 2 miles for those 7-9 and 2½ miles for those 10-13.
The walk run is a half-mile for the 7-9 group and 1 mile for those 10-13.
To register, visit www.active.com with the keyword search “cub tracks.”
