Pathfinders: Support for Grieving Children, is seeking volunteer facilitators for its fall 2009 session, reports Linda Boyle and Deb Jacques.
Training for volunteers begins Saturday, Sept. 12. More information is available by calling Boyle at 973-8269.
Founded by Maria Brountas and the late Barbara Eames, Pathfinders is a 10-week session providing “grief support for children and their families, or caregivers, who are experiencing the death of a loved one,” Boyle and Jacques wrote.
“Adults who attend with children meet in their own groups. Teens can attend on their own as long as they have the consent of their caregiver.”
Now in its 15th year, the program is for individuals age 4 through young adult. To help defray costs, a $50 per-family fee is charged but a limited number of scholarships is available.
A program of Bangor Area Visiting Nurses and Eastern Maine Healthcare Systems, the 2009 fall session runs 6-7:30 p.m. beginning Monday, Oct. 5, and ending Monday, Dec. 7, at Redeemer Lutheran Church on Essex Street in Bangor.

Joe Carr of the University of Maine reports that the UMaine chapter of Sigma Phi Epsilon fraternity is holding its annual Camp Out for YouthAIDS through today on the corner of the Mall near Fogler Library and the Memorial Union on the Orono campus.
One of Sig Ep’s major fundraisers of the year, this effort usually raises “about $1,500, all of which gets donated to spread awareness of AIDS and its impact on people” ages 15 to 24, Carr wrote.
However, with approximately 10,000 people on campus, he continued, “if everyone on campus donates $1, Sig Ep will make in excess of $10,000.”
Through media, pop culture, music, theater and sport, Carr wrote, YouthAIDS, an education and prevention program of Population Services International, works to “reach 600 million young people in more than 60 countries with lifesaving messages, products, services and care.”

With the fourth annual Eastport Pirate Festival taking place Sept. 11-13 in Eastport, John Miller reminds folks that festival organizers and Eastport restaurateur Bob Del Papa will hold a Pirate Party at 1 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 5, at The Eastport Chowder House after “the Invasion of Lubec.”
Admission is by donation, and you can purchase hot dogs, hamburgers “and confections, along with your favorite beverages,” Miller wrote.
The Pirate Party, he said, is “a fundraiser to help pay for the nonprofit Pirate Festival.”
Anyone who wants to be part of the “Invasion of Lubec” on Saturday, Sept. 5, must make reservations by calling Eastport Windjammers at 853-2500.
Space is limited, and tickets are $25 to participate “in the invasion on-board the Pirate Ship Sylvina W. Beal, which sets sail for Lubec at 9 a.m.” that day, Miller wrote.

The Rev. Lynne Josselyn invites the public to a Celebration Ecumenical Service at 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 6, at the Caribou Performing Arts Center.
The service features a 20-voice choir and a nine-piece band offering musical selections “as a vital part of the closing” of Caribou’s Sesquicentennial event, the Rev. Josselyn wrote.
