BANGOR – Frances Evelyn Hawkes, 88, died Sept. 9, 2009, surrounded by her loving family at her home. She was born Sept. 27, 1920, in Bangor, the daughter of Seth H. and Flossie M. (Cochrane) Libbey. Frances was a member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Bangor. There are many fond memories of spending summers on Pushaw Lake with all the family. Frances had a strong faith and positive outlook that helped her handle many adversities she encountered throughout her life. She was a dear wife, mother, daughter, grandmother, great-grandmother and sister, and will be sadly missed. She is survived by her sons, James Hawkes and wife, Phyllis, of Brewer, Richard Hawkes and wife, Terri, of Bangor, and Michael Hawkes and wife, Susan, of Dyer Brook; a daughter and best friend, Rosemary Driggers of Bangor; a sister, Geraldine Richards and husband, Reginald, of Bangor; grandchildren, Jamie, Jason, Danielle, Brent and Joshua; great-grandchildren, Mary, Rachel, Jacob, Madyson and Delaney; her niece and “camp buddy,” Patricia Libbey of Bangor; many other nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, James Hawkes; a daughter, Alice Ann Hawkes; a granddaughter, Angelica Skipper; a brother and several sisters. The family thanks the hospice and health care caregivers for their compassion and hard work during this difficult time. Friends may call 10-11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 12, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where funeral services will begin 11 a.m. Interment will be at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor.
