BANGOR – Alice Concetta (Annino) Carto, 96, passed away peacefully Sept. 15, 2009, surrounded by her loving daughters at a Bangor nursing facility. Alice was born Nov. 25, 1912, in West Springfield, Mass., to the late Samuel V. and Mary (Eldridge) Annino. Alice grew up and attended schools in West Springfield, Mass. She then attended beauty school and worked with her father in his barbershop. After raising her three daughters she went back to work in a paper mill before taking a job at Eastern Long Island Hospital, Greenport, N.Y. She had a musical ear, enjoying classical and opera music and even played the piano as a young woman. Alice was an avid reader, enjoying many genres of book. She attended Bangor Baptist Church for many years. Alice will be remembered as a loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, great-great-grandmother, sister and friend to all. Alice is survived by her three loving daughters, Judith Johnson of Masontown, W.Va., Cynthia Durost and Alice Donovan and husband, Michael, all of Brewer; grandchildren, Charles W. Johnson of Harrisburg, Pa., Tabitha L. Holmes and husband, Jeff, of Independence, W.Va., Mark N. Johnson and wife, Crystal, of Harrington, Del., Heather Knauer and husband, Jim, of Ormond Beach, Fla., Lisa Chichetto and husband, James, of Etna and Scott L. Hayden and wife, Cristina, of Queensbury, N.Y.; three great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren; one brother, Joseph Annino of West Springfield, Mass.; several nieces and nephews too numerous to mention. Alice was predeceased by her loving husband of 61 years, John D. Carto; and one brother, Samuel Annino. The Carto family thanks Eastside Rehabilitation and Living Center and Beacon Hospice for their exemplary care during Alice’s time of need. Family and friends may call 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 17, at Hampden-Gilpatrick Funeral Home, 45 Western Ave., Hampden. A graveside service will be held 2 p.m. Friday, Sept. 18, at Lakeview Cemetery, Western Avenue, Hampden, with the Rev. Dick Woehr officiating.
