BANGOR – Harriett A. Clarke, 89, wife of 64 years to the late Frederick E. Clarke Sr., passed away peacefully Sept. 23, 2009, at a Brewer health care facility, after a long illness. She was born Dec. 2, 1919, in Portland, the daughter of Myles and Inez (Dyer) O’Reilly. Harriett was raised on Cliff Island and graduated from Portland High School. She married Fred, March 21, 1939. The family resided in Westbrook, Machias and for the past 50-plus years in Bangor. Harriett was a bookkeeper for 30 years with A&P, Bangor, and also worked at the Machias A&P, retiring in the early 1980s. She was a loving mother and grandmother, and will be remembered for her sense of humor and her cooking abilities, especially the baked beans and homemade bread and pickles. She is survived by her son, Frederick E. Clarke Jr. and his wife, Dianne, of Bangor; her daughter, Barbara Grant of Machias; grandchildren, Fred and Julie Clarke of Winter Haven, Fla., Scott and Jennifer Clarke of Bangor, and Susan Grant of Waterville; great-grandchildren, Nicole Connelly and husband, Tim, of California, Brian, Laura and Jordan Clarke of Bangor, and Brianna Grant of Vermont; three sisters, Inez and her husband, David Farrell, of Massachusetts, Ethel and Jim Wilson of Michigan, and Alice and Norman Buehne of Westbrook; a favorite niece, Elizabeth Flaherty of Westbrook; many nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents and husband, she was predeceased by her four sisters, Pat, Betty, Thelma and Christine; five brothers, Charlie, Ernest, Jack, Ben and Mike; and also a niece, Loretta. The family thanks the staff at Brewer Rehabilitation and Living Center for their kindness and loving care. Graveside services will be held 11 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29, at Pine Grove Cemetery, Bangor, with the Rev. Robert T. Carlson officiating.
