ARGYLE TOWNSHIP – Arthur E. Burns, 80, passed away Sept. 29, 2009, with his wife by his side at a Bangor health care facility. He was born Dec. 18, 1928, the son of George E. and Beatrice (Brown) Burns Carey. Arthur went to work for the state highway tar crew at the age of 13. He worked for six summers for the state and his last job was driving a truck. He then worked for Allen Rooks of Hampden and Clarence Raundy putting on siding and windows throughout the state. Arthur held a Class 1 driver’s license, and drove a truck at Loring Air Force Base, Limestone. He worked eight years at TM Chapman’s, Old Town, before working at the steam and power plant for James River for 31 years, retiring in 1990. Arthur held an engineer’s license for boilers as well. He was also an avid coin collector and a great storyteller. Arthur is survived by his wife of 59 years, Nancie; his three children, Robert and his wife, Susan, of Brooklin, Conn., James and his wife, Jill, of Wilton, N.H., and Christine of Hollis; his 13 grandchildren, Shane, Brian, Harley, Peter, Johnny, Bryant, Brittni, Jessica, Jennifer, Michael, Dalton, Adam and Aidan; and his nine great-grandchildren. He is also survived by his special feline friend, Molly. In addition to his parents, Arthur was predeceased by his two brothers, Paul in 1986 and George in 1998. Family and friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, where a memorial service will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday with Pastor Steven Smith officiating. Interment will be after at Alton Cemetery. All are invited for a gathering afterward in the fellowship hall at Alton United Methodist Church.
