HANCOCK – Adah M. Piper, 89, died Oct. 8, 2009, surrounded by her family and friends at an Ellsworth hospital. She was born Sept. 16, 1920, in Franklin, a daughter of E. Dalton Reed Sr. and Della (Goodwin) Reed. In her early years she did housekeeping on Mount Desert Island and at Lucerne Lodge. Adah married Donald Piper in 1943. She worked at Adams Corp. dressing the children of Ellsworth. Adah and Donald enjoyed their camp on Webb’s Pond for many years. She also enjoyed fishing and snowmobiling. After retiring and moving to Hancock Adah did housekeeping for her friends, mowed her lawn, planted her garden and enjoyed her time with her neighbor, Harry Preble, and the many cats she had during the years. She was leading an active life and enjoying her fall cleaning upon her admittance to the hospital. Adah is survived by her son, Donald C. Piper of Hancock and his companion, Susan M. Bernier; her cat, Minnie; two sisters, Mrs. Emma Williams and Mrs. Gloria Mosley and her husband, Ray, both of Franklin; a special niece, Diane Connelly and her husband, Tim, of Waldoboro; a personal friend, Nancy Robinson and her husband, Jeff, of Bucksport; several nieces and nephews and their families. She was predeceased by her husband of 31 years, Donald in 1974; her sister, Avis Grindle in 1975; as well as her brother, E. Dalton Reed Jr. in 2007. A memorial service will be held 3 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 18, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth, with Pastor Bob Maddocks officiating. A time of celebration of Adah’s life will be after the service at Ellsworth Elks Lodge, 317 High St., Ellsworth, ME 04605.
