Bower leads MMA by Mass. Maritime

BUZZARDS BAY, Mass. — Jim Bower ran for 255 yards and four touchdowns and his Maine Maritime Academy Mariners won their sixth straight Admiral’s Cup with a 41-34 victory over Massachusetts Maritime Saturday. The senior fullback averaged 6.2 yards per carry while helping the Mariners im-prove to 5-1 overall and 3-1 in the New England Football Conference’s Bogan Division. Mike Riley led MMA defensively with 10 solo tackles and Wade Mondoux of Berwick had eight plus a sack. Quarterback Tyler Angell returned from injury and ran for a 1-yard touchdown as well as a two-point conversion. Sophomore back Matthew Rende of Augusta put MMA ahead 41-20 on a 1-yard TD run with 8:49 left in the game in the 37th edition of the annual rivalry. Ryan Howley led the 2-5 (1-3) Buccaneers with 14 tack-les (eight solo) and freshman quarterback Matt Spinazzola threw for two touchdown passes to pace the offense.

At Brunswick, Ian Vieira ran for one touchdown, intercepted two passes, made four tackles and had half a sack to help lead the Bowdoin College Polar Bears to the Homecoming win over Hamilton. Oliver Kell completed 28 of 44 passes for 272 yards and two touchdowns and Justin Starr had six receptions for 111 yards.

At Waterville, Eric Bunker blocked a punt and returned it four yards for a touchdown in the third quarter and Amherst scored nine unanswered points to spark a run of nine unanswered points in the fourth quarter by Amherst.

At Middletown, Conn., the Wesleyan Cardinals won its fourth straight game against Bates as Blake DuBois completed 18 of 33 passes for 244 yards and three touchdowns. Bates quarterback Ryan Katon threw for a touchdown and 201 yards. His only interception was returned 54 yards for a touchdown by Cyprian Oyomba with 5:38 left.
