FALMOUTH – Frances Virginia Fling, 85, died Oct. 22, 2009, at Sedgewood Commons, Falmouth, where she had resided for several years. She was born Feb. 24, 1923, in Old Town, the only child of Henry Fling and Lillian (Lord) Fling. She attended Old Town schools, where she made lifelong friends. Frances worked for 44 years as a laboratory technician in the Animal Pathology Department of the University of Maine, where her careful and deliberate habits were well suited to the painstaking and methodical laboratory procedures. Even after retirement she was called in to do special work on a vaccine for poultry, preparing more than a million poultry vaccinations for one particular vaccine. Her cousins’ children enjoyed visits to “Aunt” Frances at work and the chance to see the guinea pigs and look through her microscope. Away from her work, Frances had many interests: gardening, photography, her dogs, participation in the Eastern Star and Bangor Symphony concerts. The careful maintenance of her home and gardens was her most absorbing activity throughout her years in Old Town. Frances leaves behind her family of kind caregivers at Sedgewood Commons and she will be fondly remembered by her relatives, Linda Fulda of Cumberland, Rosalind Wade of Kennebunkport, Steven Sabin of Wilton, Harvey Sabin of Wilton, Roger Sabin of Andover, James Searles of Bath, Timothy Sabin of Baltimore and Julie Searles of Bonita Springs, Fla.; and her special friends, Lise Ketchen of Old Town, Ellen Dorn of Livingston, N.J., and Ellen Bear of Raymond. Burial will be at Lawndale Cemetery, Old Town, at a date to be decided by her family. Should friends desire, contributions in Frances’ name may be made to Old Town Animal Orphanage, Airport Road, Old Town, ME 04468 or The Millwee Chapter No. 198 Charity Fund, Order of the Eastern Star, care of Wilda Naugler, secretary, 9 Cross St., Brewer, ME 04412.
