THOMASTON, Maine — Three Rockland residents were hospitalized Saturday after a collision on Route 1 near Lowe’s home improvement store. They all were treated at Penobscot Bay Medical Center in Rockport and released, said a hospital spokeswoman.
Timothy Benner, 42, of Rockland was driving his 1998 Mercedes Benz west on Route 1 when he lost control of the car and crossed into opposing traffic, according to Thomaston Police Department Sgt. Mike Janczura. The Mercedes collided with a 1995 Chevrolet pickup truck driven by David Cowan, 55, of Rockland.
Both drivers and a passenger in Benner’s car, Donna Cox, 32, of Rockland, complained of injuries at the scene. They were not seriously hurt, said Janczura, though he said the outcome could have been much worse. Rescue workers from Thomaston and Rockland used an extrication device to remove Cox from the Mercedes.
“They’re lucky that their injuries weren’t more serious,” said Janczura, who added that no charges had been filed in relation to the accident, but that the case remains under investigation.
Heavy rain in the area was likely a factor.
“The Mercedes lost control and hydroplaned,” said Janczura. “There’s no doubt the road conditions were a factor. It was downpouring.”
