BREWER and BANGOR – Richard C. Greenlaw, 62, passed away suddenly Oct. 16, 2009, in Zephyrhills, Fla. He was born April 5, 1947, in Belfast, the son of Byron and Carolyn (Knowlton) Thompson. After graduating from Crosby High School, he received his bachelor’s degree from Appalachian State University and his master’s degree from the University of Maine. Dick was a dedicated teacher, coach and principal throughout his 35 years in education, including 21 years as principal at Mattanawcook Academy. He was passionate about coaching basketball and working with young athletes, and was proud of his association with Pine Tree Basketball Camp, which spanned more than four decades. After his retirement he coached along with his son, Ben, at Hampden Academy. Dick was a dedicated and loving husband, father and grandfather. He loved spending time with his family playing cards, reading to his grandchildren and playing golf with his wife in Florida. He was kind and always willing to lend a helping hand whether it was shingling a roof, mowing a field or making whoopie pies. Richard is survived by his wife of 39 years, Jane (Norton) Greenlaw; his children, Brian and his wife, Linda, Benjamin and his wife, Katie, and Brad and his fiancee, Jena Jones; two precious grandchildren, Grace and Brent; his stepfather, Vernon Thompson; aunt, Helen Burns, who was like a big sister; one brother, Arthur and his wife, Winnie and their son, Adam; two sisters and their husbands, Jean and Rich Nielsen and her son, Logan, and Melody and Jeff Keene and sons, Travis and Kyle; many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his mother and father. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30, at Brookings-Smith, 133 Center St., Bangor, where a service of remembrance will be held 10 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 31, with the Rev. Robert T. Carlson officiating. Interment will be at Head of the Tide Cemetery, Belfast, at a later date. Gifts in his memory may be made to the Richard C.
