AUGUSTA, Maine — Maine anglers and the state are applauding a ruling by federal fisheries regulators on striped bass fishing.
The Atlantic States Marine Fisheries Commission rejected a proposal to expand the commercial catch of striped bass in coastal states to the south. The commission rejected a plan that would have allowed states with commercial fisheries to carry over unused quota from one year to the next.
The Kennebec Journal in Augusta says the 8-6 vote was Tuesday.
Mainers contended it was the wrong time to expand the commercial catch, especially in the Chesapeake Bay region, the primary spawning and nursery area for the fish.
