The Katahdin Area Council, Boy Scouts of America will honor the Maine Troop Greeters during its 14th annual Distinguished Citizens Dinner at 6 p.m. on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, at the Bangor Civic Center.

Scout executive Gary Savignano reports the Distinguished Citizen Award will be presented to the greeters in recognition of that group of veterans and other residents who support “our armed forces serving overseas by greeting troops who arrive at Bangor International Airport” day or night, regardless of the weather, according to the KAC release.

The Rev. Bob Carlson will be host, Maj. Gen. John W. Libby will be the keynote speaker, and, through a video presentation, former President Bill Clinton and Sen. William Cohen will extend remarks to the greeters.

Starting today and continuing through Nov. 27, Dexter first-grader Natalie Claverie is conducting a Pajama and Book Drive for the Pajama Program.

Natalie is requesting new pajamas with tags in all sizes from newborn through size 12, for boys and girls, e-mailed her mom, Sasha Claverie, adding that “books also need to be brand new.”

The Maine Chapter of the Pajama Program was begun in April 2007 by Karen Dorrell of Fairfield, after she saw its founder on television.

“The Maine Chapter is currently supporting 18 receiving organizations across the state,” Dorrell explained to me, giving as examples area organizations including “Spruce Run, Womancare and Families and Children Together.”

Program manager Kelly Brown of The Next Step Domestic Violence Project, which serves victims of abuse in Hancock and Washington counties, reports its group, A Call To Men, is showing the movie “Breaking Out of the Man Box,” 6-8 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 10, at Faith Community Fellowship in Trenton.

The program will be moderated by disc jockey Bill DaButler. Pizza and popcorn will be served and a panel discussion will follow “to answer how domestic violence and sexual assault impacts certain professions within our community,” Brown wrote.

And while “this film is unrated,” Brown wrote she would rate it “PG-13 for language.”

Brown invites everyone to attend “this event and help end violence against women.”

Barbara McDade, chair of the Rotary Club of Bangor Festival of Lights parade, reports that event will begin at 4:30 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 5, in Bangor.

Although there is no fee to enter the parade, applications by groups or businesses that want to participate must be completed by Tuesday, Nov. 10.

The theme is “Joys of the Season,” reflecting “our hope for the world,” McDade wrote.

“Seventy glittering units can be accommodated,” McDade wrote of scenes “celebrating Christmas, Hanukkah, Ramadan and Kwanzaa.”
