CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — The Harvard University women used an early nine-point run to seize momentum in a game they would lead throughout en route to a 72-56 basketball victory over the University of Maine Tuesday night.
Forward Samantha Wheeler led the 1-1 Black Bears with 15 points and eight rebounds, while Crimson freshman Victoria Lippert hit 10 of 12 shots from the field overall and 4-of-5 from 3-point range before finishing with 24 points and three steals in 24 minutes for the 2-0 Ivy League team.
Jasmine Rush and Brittany Williams each scored nine points off the bench for Maine. Amanda Tewksbury had eight points and seven rebounds. Katelyn Vanderhoff had seven points, six rebounds and three assists.
After falling behind 14-4 in the first six minutes, Maine would cut the lead to seven points in the first half, but the Crimson went into halftime ahead 33-20 after shooting 53.8 percent (7-for-13) from 3-point range. Harvard would never lead by less than 14 in the second half.
The Bears outrebounded Harvard 44-33 overall and 22-11 on the offensive boards while outscoring the Crimson 11-4 in second-chance points, but Harvard held a big shooting advantage — 45.9 to 32.8 percent from the field in the game — after canning 17 of 30 (56.7 percent) field goals in the second half.
Claire Wheeler scored 15 points off Harvard’s bench and Brogan Berry dished out a game-high nine assists while committing just one of Harvard’s 16 turnovers.

At Biddeford, the Nor’easters handed the 13th-ranked Huskies their first season-opening loss since 1989.
Margo Russell posted 14 points for UNE, Beth Suggs added 13, and they each grabbed 10 rebounds.
Curran Leighton led Southern Maine with 18 points.

The Huskies of Gorham were powered by Cortez Isaac’s game-high 30 points. .John Sewall had 17 points and Otis Smith 10.
