ABBOT, Maine — A New Jersey couple escaped injury Friday when their vehicle struck black ice on Route 15 and rolled over, according to police.

Wayne Miller, 61, of Elmer, N.J., and his passenger, wife Rita Miller, 63, were southbound when the 6:42 a.m. accident occurred, investigator Sgt. Mike Gould of the Piscataquis County Sheriff’s Department said. Both were wearing seat belts.

When Miller lost control of the vehicle, it slammed into and over large boulders by Drummond’s Pit, Gould said.

“He was quite lucky,” Gould observed.

The 2002 Chevrolet Avalanche was demolished.

Guilford firefighters and Mayo ambulance arrived at the scene.
