AVILLA, Ind. – Sheldon M. Durost, 53, formerly of Mars Hill and Presque Isle, passed away unexpectedly Sept. 21, 2009, after the bicycle he was riding was struck by a motorist. Sheldon was born Sept. 19, 1956, in Mars Hill, son of the the Rev. Theodore F. Durost and Lois Hubbard Durost. He lived for many years in Alaska and considered Alaska the home of his heart. He was an avid bicyclist for more than 30 years and was recognized by many in the Mars Hill area, for his enthusiasm to ride during the winter months. He was an outdoor enthusiast and while in Alaska, he toured the state on bicycle, camping out and avoiding close calls with the wildlife that inhabit the state. He took many wonderful photos to commemorate his Alaskan adventure. For the last several years, Sheldon had been his mom’s primary caregiver enabling her to live independently and with dignity. He will be greatly missed by the residents of Provena LaVerna Terrace Apartments, Avilla, Ind., where he so willingly, and with gentle assistance, helped the elderly, and those incapacitated by illness, to live easier lives. He is survived by his mother, Lois Durost of Avilla, Ind.; a sister, Lynn (Durost) Lombard and her husband, Richard, of Caribou; and a brother, Anthony Durost of Spencer, Ind. A memorial service with interment afterward will be held in the spring at Pierce Cemetery, Mars Hill.
