Organizer Randy Kluj of American Legion Post 41 of Milo reports doors open at 10:30 a.m. Sunday, Dec. 6, at the Bangor Civic Center for the public kickoff of the Wreaths Across America project.
The public is invited and there is no admission charge.
Maj. Gen. John Libby, adjutant general of the Maine Army National Guard, will be the keynote speaker for the event that begins with a Post 41 POW-MIA Ceremony, Kluj said.
Project founders Morrill and Karen Worcester of Worcester Wreath Co. in Harrington are expected to attend “with their caravan of trucks headed to Arlington National Cemetery,” Kluj added.
Units of the Maine Air National Guard will post the colors; Stephanie Gillis will direct the musical entertainment by Milo area school students; and a veteran’s recognition parade will include representatives of participating organizations.
Kluj, whose son is a pilot in Iraq, said doughnuts, coffee and refreshments will be on sale and that more information is available by calling him at 943-5509.
After the ceremony at Bangor Civic Center, the Wreaths Across America convoy will make its way to Hermon for a Holiday Ceremonial Service at 1 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial located in front of Hermon Elementary School on Billings Road.
Chief Chris Bowers, with the JROTC program, said several wreaths will be unloaded for local veterans’ graves, one special wreath will be unloaded for the new memorial and, for the first time, the flags will be raised at this Veterans Memorial site.
Bowers suggests anyone planning to attend this ceremony arrive early enough to secure adequate parking.
After this ceremony, the Wreaths Across America convoy will continue its journey to its final destination at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia.
