Staff member Kerry Sack of the Charlotte White Center reminds readers the CWC Angels program “provides school supplies and holiday gifts for more than 400 children and their siblings served by CWC and other area agencies.”
Sack said this program is supported by CWC agency staff contributions “throughout the year, via payroll deductions, bottle drives and fundraising events.”
She added that monetary donations and-or new school supplies “will provide gifts that keep on giving throughout the school year, and will enable more children to benefit.”

Carlene Hirsch and members of her Bangor High School drama program are selling tickets for their musical production of Disney’s “Beauty and the Beast.”
Show times for the five performances are 7 p.m. Wednesday, Dec. 9, through Saturday, Dec. 12, with an additional matinee at 1 p.m. Dec. 12, in Peakes Auditorium at BHS on Broadway.
Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for students and senior citizens over 60, and may be reserved by calling the BHS drama department, 992-5567.

Jan Cox and the Brewer Hometown Band invite you to “a playful concert” at 7 p.m. Thursday, Dec. 10, at Brewer Auditorium.
“We’ll have something for everyone,” Cox wrote of “powerful band selections, a little craziness, a seasonal singalong and Santa.”
And “since there are many among us who need some help with their holiday dinner,” Cox added, “we are asking our concert-goers to bring items for the local food cupboard.”

Sarah Clark e-mailed that the next Boyd Place Galley Show at Phillips-Strickland House “will be a juried quilt show,” and that the hosts are issuing a “call for entries.”
The Boyd Place Juried Quilt Show will run from February through May 2010 at Boyd Place, 21 Boyd St. in Bangor.
Quilts should be 45 by 60 inches, crib size or smaller, and the prizes offered are $100 each for the Jurors’ Choice and Residents’ Choice winners.
The jurors will be Liane Giambalvo, Dianne Hodgkins and Anne Freeman, and the entry fee is $20.

One week ago today I was one of many bidding a final farewell to a special friend.
I am certain more people than his family can possibly imagine have their own special memories of Sanford “Sonny” Miller, who was 82, when he died on Thanksgiving Day.
Sonny was not only a caring and compassionate family man, but also a caring and compassionate employer and community member.
Although I had known who Sonny Miller was since moving to Bangor in the late ’60s, it wasn’t until 22 years ago, when he married Joanne, one of my dearest friends, that Sonny came to be my friend as well.
We have shared much these two-plus decades, but perhaps, for me, the most meaningful aspect of my relationship with Sonny was his thoughtful, insightful guidance when I sought answers to questions about the faith that my son would come to share with him.
Sonny answered all my questions about Judaism — at any time, during any season — and I will be eternally grateful to him for showing me the way to share this very special part of my California family’s life.
Sonny loved, and was loved, so well. He made life better for all who knew him.
I share with Joanne, Sonny’s children, stepchildren and their extended family and friends the significance of his loss and the gratitude for his being.
