BANGOR – David George Spurling, 83, of Southwest Harbor, passed away Dec. 17, 2009, at the Maine Veterans’ Home, Bangor, after a long battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 1, 1926, on Cranberry Island, son of the late Hervey Merton and Daisy Abbot Spurling. David spent many of his younger years with his Grandmother Abbot in Eastbrook of which he had many fond memories. At age 10, his family moved to Manset. In the early 1940s, he moved to Connecticut to work at Stanley Works. He remained at this company, retiring after 40 years of employment. His only break was the two years he served in the U.S. Army going to the European Theatre. He traveled to many countries during his lifetime such as Russia, Italy, France, England and Brazil. Talking of other cultures and their cooking was one of his greatest pastimes. His other great endeavor was researching the family heritage. David could talk for hours about all of the people who had passed before him. He also enjoyed music and took piano lessons later in his life. After his retirement, he moved to Southwest Harbor, where he had been for the past 20 years. During this time he served on Southwest Harbor Ambulance Committee. He was predeceased by his parents; his stepmother, Thelma Clough; his sisters and their spouses, Rosemary Spurling, Marjorie and her husband, Gary Bromby, and Lucille and her husband, John Mains; and his brother, George Spurling. He is survived by his brother, Harley and wife, Elaine and family of Gray; and a sister, Betty Stone and husband, Arnie, of Sebago. He is also survived by a very special nephew, Jamie Lewis and his wife, Roxanne, of Seal Cove; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and many special friends. A funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, Dec. 21, at Bragdon-Kelly Funeral Home, 215 Main St., Ellsworth. Burial will be afterward at Sunnyside Cemetery, Eastbrook.
