A local transient was arrested on a theft charge Wednesday after allegedly trying to steal a television and a bottle of cologne from the Bangor Wal-Mart Supercenter.
After his arrest, Cody Loureiro, 21, was taken to Penobscot County Jail, where he remained late Wednesday night, according to Bangor police Sgt. Larry Weber.
According to Weber, the incident began about 2:30 p.m., when a Wal-Mart loss prevention officer reportedly saw Loureiro select a 22-inch Phillips flat-screen television, valued at $268, then head to the automotive department, where he was seen tucking a $6 bottle of cologne into one of his pockets.
After a visit to the men’s room, the suspect then headed toward the exit, passing by several cash registers before stepping outside. There, he was confronted by a store security officer, who escorted him to an office to wait for the police.
According to the police report, Loureiro claimed he planned to go back in to pay for the items after having a cigarette, Weber said, adding that the report indicated that Loureiro’s version of what took place changed several times.
