While many TV dramas have gotten more and more intricate, a new Fox series is taking the opposite approach, celebrating a man of action.

“Human Target,” debuting at 8 p.m. Sunday before moving to Wednesdays Jan. 20, tells the story of Christopher Chance (Mark Valley, “Boston Legal”), a chameleonlike security expert-bodyguard, who uses an encyclopedic mind and vast physical skills to protect his clients.

Based on the DC comic of the same name, the series hints that Chance has crossed over from the dark side to help those in need.

The chiseled Valley is perfectly cast as Chance, and this role allows him to show off his comedic skills more than in some of his past series.

He is ably supported by Chi McBride (“Pushing Daisies”), in another of the exasperated supervisor roles he does so well, and Jackie Earle Haley as a shady fixer whose services Chance employs.

“Human Target” is a 45-minute thrill ride that has the advantage of sharing the evening with “American Idol.” It eventually will settle at 8 p.m., where it’s up against comedies and a couple of flailing dramas, which should also allow this new drama to be on target.
