KNOX – Caroline Barnes, of Knox Ridge North, died Jan. 14, 2010, at Maine Medical Center, Portland. She was struck by a car Jan. 6, 2010, while walking near her home. Caroline was born in 1929, in Lewiston, the daughter of August Buschmann and Catharine Sears Buschmann. Caroline’s second mother, Elizabeth King Buschmann, raised Caroline as her own daughter after the death of Caroline’s mother. Caroline attended Bates College and later graduated from Clark University, Class of 1962. She taught middle school English in Sutton, Mass., and Shrewsbury, Mass., before relocating to Knox, where she taught at SAD 3. During her early teaching career, she earned two master’s degrees from Clark University. Caroline worked as a certified nurse’s aide at Bethany Care Facility, Albion, after she retired from teaching. Caroline lived an active, vigorous and independent life. She was known in her community as a cheerful helper and an energetic doer. She was happiest when working in her garden, caring for her dog and tending her home and yard. She will be greatly missed by her many friends and her family. Caroline was predeceased by her husband of 42 years, Bowdoin Barnes; and her second husband of nine years, Norman Linson. Caroline leaves daughters, Dorothy and husband, Irving Stephens, and Catharine and husband, Peter Busch; and four grandchildren. Caroline was the oldest of seven children, all of whom survive her, Marion True, Edmund Buschmann, Elizabeth and husband, Jackie Smith, Wally, John and wife, Chris, and Fritz Buschmann. Her extended family includes many nieces, nephews and cousins. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 20, at Unity College Center for the Performing Arts, 42 Depot St., Unity.
