LEE – Virginia (Gould) Smith went home unexpectedly to be with the Lord, Jan. 16, 2010, at Penobscot Valley Hospital. She was born Oct. 11, 1929, at Grand Lake Stream, the daughter of the late James and Helena “Tina” Gould. She was a voracious reader, loved to work in her garden, made the best doughnuts and biscuits, and loved taking care of her family and friends. She was a member of American Legion Auxiliary of Lee, Lee Historical Society and First Baptist Church of Lee. In recent years, she loved serving the Lord and enjoyed her church family at Springfield Community Chapel. She did many jobs throughout her life. She worked at Rosebowl Restaurant, Forsters Clothes Pin Mill, harvested potatoes, was a dorm parent at Lee Academy, taught at Lee Christian School, was a personal care giver, served as a town selectman, but her most important job was being a loving mother and grandmother. She will be greatly missed by her family and all who knew her. In addition to her parents, Virginia was predeceased by her husband, Hersey; a daughter, Beverly; two brothers, Darrell “Buddy” Gould and Carroll Gould; and two sisters, Florence Hendrick and Evelyn “Joedy” Mallory. She is survived by her sons, Bruce Smith and his wife, Nancy, of Machiasport, and Brent, Bert and Bryant Smith of Lee; a daughter, Bethany Smith of Lee; six grandchildren, Jason Smith, Justin Smith and his wife, Cecilia, Jared Smith and his wife, Marie, Julie Smith, Jonathan and Dana Smith; and three great-granddaughters, Kaeanna, Kaia and Kieli Smith. Friends may call 6-8 p.m. Wednesday at Clay Funeral Home, 7 Lee Road, Lincoln. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at Springfield Community Chapel with the Rev. Bruce Swan officiating.
