SEARSPORT, Maine — A five-vehicle pileup on snowy Route 1 in Searsport resulted in multiple injuries, at least one of them serious, just after noon Tuesday.
Rescue crews were on the scene near the Belfast town line shortly before 1 p.m. and traffic was backed up in both directions.
A second collision apparently occurred when two other vehicles tried to avoid the pileup and hit each other.
A total of six people were involved in the crash. Three were taken to the hospital, police said.
Route 1 has been shut down between Belfast and Searsport, according to police, who say the closure could last for hours.
