BREWER – Blaine Clifford Macomber, 80, died Jan. 21, 2010, at a Bangor health care center. He was born Jan. 25, 1929, in Sangerville, the son of Clifford S. and Hannah M. (Church) Macomber. He attended schools in Guilford. Blaine’s early years as a professional boxer became his trademark. He was a very popular lightweight who toured boxing rings all throughout New England in the 1940s and ’50s. He cherished those special years and his love for boxing followed him throughout his years. Blaine was a champion to many people. God’s gift of animals and nature were Blaines to enjoy. He loved the outdoors and could be found cutting and splitting firewood on his wood lot. Blaine was “home” when he was trapping in a beaver bog or fishing a brook. His profound love of nature prompted him to write an article “Tribute to a Trapline Hound” for Field and Stream magazine. Blaine was an honest, humble, hardworking gentleman who lived a life of integrity. All of those who knew and loved him will tell you he was a rare man; he was a gift and will be sorely missed. Blaine married Lucy Wells, in 1946, and they moved to Bangor shortly thereafter. He was employed by the city of Bangor in the parks and recreation department for 38 1/2 years, retiring in 1991. After retiring, he operated his landscaping and firewood business in Brewer. Blaine was a member of Second Congregational Church of Brewer and Maine Trappers Association. Surviving are his loving wife of 63 years, Lucy (Wells) Macomber of Brewer; three children, Jerry Macomber and his wife, Faye, of Old Town, Jo-Ann (Macomber) McKenney and her husband, Ralph, of Eliot, and Dennis Macomber and his fiancee, Beth, of Winston-Salem, N.C.; six grandchildren, Todd Knight and Billie, Matthew Knight, Ryan McKenney, Lance Macomber and Seanna, Carri-Jo and Stephen Grimes, and Daniel Macomber, U.S. Navy; five great-grandchildren; two brothers, Elwin and Dale; a sister, Juanita; many nieces and nephews; and a special neighbor of Blaine and Lucy’s, Ethel Pooler.
