GUILFORD – Carl E. McKusick, 95, died Jan. 21, 2010, at Mayo Regional Hospital, Dover-Foxcroft. He was born Dec. 13, 1914, in Dexter, son of Fred and Myra (Parker) McKusick. Carl attended Guilford schools and graduated from Guilford High School, Class of 1933. After graduating from high school, Carl worked at the Community Theatre, Guilford, as the projectionist and assistant manager. In 1947 he purchased H.L. Harrington Coal and Trucking business. He changed the name to McKusick Fuel Co. and added heating oils and LP gas. During these years, he served as town clerk of Guilford and was appointed agent for Railway Express. In 1959 he purchased a 50 percent interest in the Chase and Kimball Oil Co., Dover-Foxcroft. In 1972 Carl sold his interest in Chase and Kimball and with son, John, founded McKusick Petroleum Co., Dover-Foxcroft. After retirement from McKusick Petroleum, he worked for several years as the state of Maine agent for the Good Sam Club and Trailer Life campground directory. In 1978 with his wife, Alice, he founded Sun Porch Studio, making stained glass ornaments. Carl was very active in various fuel associations, including Maine Oil Dealers Association, New England Fuel Institute and National Fuel Institute. He was charter president of Guilford Kiwanis Club, charter president of McKusick Family Association and was a member of Guilford United Methodist Church. Hobbies and interests included fishing, golf, genealogy, downhill skiing, square dancing and travel. He is survived by a daughter, Sharon O’Connell of Guilford; two sons, John and his wife, Sharon McKusick, of Abbot and Kent McKusick of Texas; grandchildren, Amy O’Connell and her husband, John McAlevey, Lisa Levasalmi and husband, Juha, all of New York, Kenneth McKusick, Charles McKusick and his wife, Tiffany, all of Abbot, Robert McKusick of Georgia, Katie Burgess and her husband, Alan, of Lewiston; great-grandchildren, Matthew, Daniel, Leland, Corey, Myra, Jack, Ella, Heikki, Matti, Connor, Caleb and Lilly; several nieces and nephews. Carl was predeceased by his wife of 62 years, Alice (Pearson) McKusick; and his brother, Elwood. He will be missed by many friends, especially Earl and Pauline Bacon of Lynn, Mass. Memorial services will be held noon Saturday, Jan. 30, at Guilford United Methodist Church with Pastor Stephen Dean officiating. Spring burial will be at Lawn Cemetery, Guilford.
