FORT KENT – Laurine V. (Ouellette) Savage, 91, died Jan. 29, 2010, at a Bangor hospital after a short illness. She was born Sept. 26, 1918, in St. Agatha, daughter of Vital Ouellette and Willemena Guimond. Laurine was orphaned at 6 years of age. She was taken in by Emile and Laura Guimond Bourgoin and raised as one of their own, along with their sons, Roger, Jim, Robert and Barney; and their daughters, Louella “Kiki” Fitzherbert and Mary Ellen “Bea” Daigle. Laurine graduated from Madawaska Training School and pursued a career in teaching. She enriched the lives and young minds of hundreds of first graders in the Fort Kent schools during her 30 years of teaching. Laurine was married to Gilman J. Savage and together they raised three children, Elizabeth “Betty” and her husband, Richard Theriault, of Fort Kent, John “Bud” Savage and Theresa “Tee” and her husband, Barney Pelletier, of Eagle Lake. Upon retiring from her profession, “Mim” visited many places of interest with family and friends: Hawaii; British Columbia; Nashville, Tenn.; Orlando, Fla.; Clearwater Beach, Fla.; South Carolina; Quebec; and her favorite place in the world, Hampton Beach, N.H.! Laurine was a member of Ladies of St. Anne, Northern Maine Medical Center Hospital Guild, the Cursillo Movement, Maine Teachers Association and Northern Aroostook Teachers Association. When she was physically able, she volunteered at Forest Hill Manor, St. Louis Book Store and Good Shepherd Thrift Shop. Laurine was an avid reader who loved her daily walk and playing Charlamangne with her Crosswinds friends. She was thankful for the comfort provided by the staff and all residents of the assisted living facility. She was predeceased by her husband, Gilman; son, Bud; grandson, Jon; four brothers, Lewellyn, Pete, Raoul and Lucien; and two sisters, Yvette Nadeau and Cecile Voisine. Laurine is survived by a brother, Paul Ouellette. Mim was extremely proud of her ambitious and successful grandsons, Steven and his wife, Terry Theriault, of Fort Kent, Paul “Rick” and his wife, Joy Theriault, of Glenburn, Mark and his wife, Lynn Theriault, of Carrabassett Valley and Shawn and his wife, Julie Savage, of Mapleton; and her equally ambitious and successful granddaughter, Holly of Cape Neddick. Mim’s pride and joy was her “awesome” bunch of great-grandchildren, Brittany, Austin, Jordan, Riki Lynn, Jonathan, Nicholas and Jacob Theriault and Connor John Savage. Friends may call 9-10:45 a.m. Monday at Daigle & Nadeau Funeral Home, Fort Kent. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 11 a.m. Monday at St. Louis Catholic Church, Fort Kent. Spring interment will be held May 18 at the parish cemetery.
