YARMOUTH – Mary Alice Whitworth, 77, a longtime Orono resident, passed away Jan. 29, 2010, in the loving company of her family at Bay Square. She was born Mary Litchfield, in 1932, in Ellsworth, along with her twin sister. Mary attended the Ellsworth school system before enrolling at the University of Maine, Orono. It was there that she met the love of her life, John “Jack” Whitworth, whom she married in 1955. For the next 38 years they ventured the country together, making homes in five states and raising four children, finally returning home to Maine for good in 1984, until Jack’s death in 1993. A beloved wife, sister, mother, grandmother, aunt, cousin, friend and colleague, Mary was also a gifted homemaker and schoolteacher, and was active with the University of Maine Alumni Association and Hospice of Eastern Maine, Bangor. Mary is survived by her sisters, Frances Silsby of Augusta and Shirley Whitcomb and husband, Eben Whitcomb, of Clinton, Conn. Mary also leaves son, John Whitworth and his wife, Pilar and their children, John and Cristina, of Abu Dhabi, United Arab Emirates; son, David Whitworth and his wife, Deborah and their children, Erin Greene and Bradley, of Portland; daughter, Elizabeth Rubino and her husband, Anthony and children, John, Marc, Katie and Alex, of Easton, Pa.; and son, Stephen Whitworth of San Francisco. A memorial service will be held 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 3, at Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford St., Portland. A reception will be held 12:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Italian Heritage Center, 40 Westland Ave., Portland.
