CASTINE – William F. Macomber Sr. died Wednesday, March 3, 2010, at his home, where he wanted to be. He died with courage, strength and dignity. Bill was born June 2, 1933, in Castine, to Austin and Ida (Orino) Macomber. He attended grammar school and high school in Castine and graduated from Maine Maritime Academy. He was a chief engineer and Merchant Marine for more than 30 years, and the president of his labor union. He owned several businesses including, Macomber’s Fine Foods, The Green Safari and Acadia Restaurant to name a few. He served the community of Castine in numerous ways including, terms on the school board, the planning board and the utility board. He also enjoyed playing poker and cribbage, and watching the Boston Celtics and Red Sox with his friends. Bill took care of and enjoyed his family to the fullest. He will be remembered and cherished always by his family for his caring generosity, wisdom, advice and that he never took while always looking for ways to give. We wish to express our immense gratitude to the special friends who made his life so rich and full, and who enabled him to remain at home. He asked to be remembered, “as I was.” He is survived by M. Gail Macomber, with whom he shared his life; and their children, Michael and wife, Susan Macomber, of Penobscot, Teresa and husband, Charles Mooney, of Penobscot, Delana and Scott LaPoint of Penobscot, Anne and husband, Alan Kirkpatrick, of Newtown, Pa., William Jr. and wife, Leah, of Saco and Ida Maria and husband, Charles Ryan, of Palm Springs, Fla. He is also survived by his brother, Robert Macomber of Castine; his sister, Mary Weissblum of Gloucester, Mass.; as well as 13 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren, Damon, Elizabeth, Michala, Joshua, Storme, Kyle, Connor, Jason, Hannah, Seth, Lucy, Austin, Edison, Kingston and Gavin. There are also his many nieces and nephews. Bill was predeceased by his parents, Austin and Ida Macomber; and granddaughter, Amber Joye Macomber. A service will be held in his honor 1 p.m. Saturday, March 6, at Unitarian Universalist Church, Court Street, Castine. There will be a brief reception after the service. Donations in lieu of flowers would be appreciated to Bagaduce Ambulance and Hospice of Hancock County or other gifts.
