MARSHFIELD – Walter R. Conlin, 86, husband of the late Evelyn (Preston) Conlin, died March 7, 2010, at a Machias hospital. He was born Feb. 24, 1924, in New York City, the son of John and Hilda Conlin. He was a U.S. Army veteran who served during World War II in the Tank Destroyer Division, and participated in the battles at Rhineland and Central Europe. He was awarded the Good Conduct Medal and World War II Victory Medal. After his discharge from the military, he settled in the Machias area with his wife, Evelyn. Walter worked in several local wood mills and worked in several different areas, including working a double band saw and plainer. He also worked at the Machias radio station as a broadcaster and Machias Valley Baptist Church radio station as well. Being familiar with woodworking, Walter was a fluent and accomplished carpenter. His hobbies included many audio and video projects, and riding his motorcycle, for which he received his license at age 82. He also enjoyed spending time with his family and was a devoted and caring husband, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He is survived by three children, Marilyn Schoppee of Machias, Howard Conlin of Jefferson, N.Y., and Candace Greenwood and her husband, Edward, of Greene. He is also survived by many grandchildren and great-grandchildren; one brother, Thomas Conlin and his wife, Carol, of Copiague, N.Y.; and one sister, Joanie Houser and her husband, Gerald, of Copiague, N.Y.; several nieces, nephews and cousins; and a very special friend, Al Nehrings. In addition and his parents and his wife of 64 years, he was predeceased by three brothers, John, James and Mickie; and one sister, Irene; and a special son-in-law, Kenneth Schoppee. Friends may call 4-6 p.m. Tuesday, March 9, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 220 Court St., Machias. A time of fellowship will be held 1-2 p.m. Wednesday, March 10, at Machias Valley Baptist Church, 6 Broadway, Machias, where a funeral service will be celebrated 2 p.m. Interment will be at Kennebec Cemetery.
