BANGOR – Ruth (Fogler) Goff died peacefully March 14, 2010, surrounded by loved ones. Ruth was born Sept. 13, 1926, in New York City. She followed her father and older siblings, attending the University of Maine, graduating in 1948 with a degree in home economics. Ruth taught nursery school for many years and continued her service to children by volunteering with Sunday school and the United Cerebral Palsy of Northeastern Maine. She was a member of United Methodist Church, Corinna. Ruth was an active member of the University of Maine Alumni Association and Senior Alumni, and tried to never miss a reunion or gathering. She was a longtime member of the Bangor Y. Ruth was completely dedicated to her family, quietly and tirelessly caring for her parents, children, grandchildren and other loved ones. Her grandchildren were the lights of her life and encouraged them in all of their adventures. Ruth was an excellent cook and everyone looked forward to her Christmas cookies. Ruth is survived by her brother, John of Exeter; sister and brother-in-law, Martha and Don Hobbs of Bar Harbor; sisters-in-law, Sarah of Exeter, Mary of Rochester, N.Y., and Barbara of Connecticut; children, Fred Goff of Exeter, Margrette Fenderson and her husband, James Curtis, of Eddington, Janice Davis and her husband, Tom, of Dedham, and Ellen Hughes and her husband, Michael, of Augusta; grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Matthew Amsden of West Hollywood, Calif., Michael Davis his wife, Amy, and their children, Hayden and Riley of Falmouth, Jason Amsden of Boston, Casey Monnier her husband, Dave, and their children, Luke and Reese of Hampden, Ben Hughes of Portland, Hillary Hughes Steenberge and her husband, Kevin, of Okinawa, Japan, and Mary Gauvin and her husband, Nick, of Prince George, Va.; along with many dear nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nieces, great-great-nephews and friends. She was predeceased by her parents, Mabel (Peabody) and Raymond Fogler; brothers, Henry, William and Thomas; sister, Mary Claverie; brother-in-law Sumner Claverie; and sister-in-law, Elaine “Punky” Fogler. Ruth’s family especially thanks niece, Mary Ellen for her caring and kindness. A service of remembrance will be held 3 p.m. Tuesday, March 16, at All Souls Congregational Church, 10 Broadway, Bangor, with the Rev. Renee U. Garrett, master of divinity, minister of Christian Nurture, officiating. The family invites relatives and friends to share conversation and refreshments in the church vestry immediately after the service.
