ST. ALBANS – On March 18, 2010, Velma Caroline (Hebert) Walker, 65, answered heaven’s call for an experienced teacher, after fighting a most extraordinary battle with cancer. She was born Feb. 8, 1945, in Las Vegas, N.M., the daughter of Eldon and Betty Jane (Beaulieu) Hebert. Velma graduated in 1963 from Stevens High School, Rumford. She then attended the University of Maine at Machias, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in early childhood education. For 33 years Velma shared her love of teaching with students in kindergarten and later first and second grade at St. Albans Consolidated School – SAD 48. For 17 of those years, she served the school as the assistant principal. In the later years of her teaching career she was teaching children of students that she once taught. Velma was a member of St. Albans Historical Society, General Federation of Women’s Clubs/ Outlook Club, and was a board member for Fairhaven Terrace living facility in St. Albans. She also enjoyed serving her town by assisting with local, state and federal elections by either counting ballots or acting as warden. However Velma’s true love and legacy, outside her granddaughter and two biological children, are her children from her years of teaching. Velma was predeceased by her father, Eldon Hebert. She is survived by her mother, Betty Jane (Beaulieu) Hebert of Auburn; her husband of nearly 40 years, Edward T. Walker of St. Albans; her daughter, Patricia Walker of St. Albans; her son, Terrance Walker and his wife, Jessica; daughter, Olivia of South Portland; three sisters and their husbands, Judith and Bruce Miller of Turner, Barbara and Gary Pelletier of Rumford and Janice and Lionel Turbide of Casco; one brother and his wife, George and Cheryl Hebert of Auburn; eight nieces and nephews, 14 great-nieces and great-nephews, a great-great-niece, numerous friends and hundreds of her school kids. Friends may call 3-4 and 6-8 p.m. Monday, March 22, at Brown Funeral Home and Cremation Service Center, 34 High St., Newport. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Tuesday, March 23, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church, Dexter, with the Rev. Mark Nolette officiating.
