DEER ISLE – Donald “Mert” A. Eaton, 49, died March 28, 2010, at his residence, after a brief battle with cancer. He was born July 14, 1960, in Blue Hill, the son of Merton and Kathleen Ann (Shepard) Eaton. Mert was a member of Joshua Davis Lodge No. 145 of Stonington. He grew up wanting to be a fisherman, and fulfilled that dream. He won his first boat race in his fishing vessel, After U II, last year after many years of racing. He was a diehard fan of the New England Patriots. He also loved playing Texas Hold ’em, going to Hollywood Slots, Bangor, and riding his motorcycle. In addition to his parents, he is survived by his wife of 19 years, Laurie; six children, Mindy Sue L. Bubar and her husband, Richard W. Jr., of Stonington, Carrie Ann Betts of Stonington, Ryan Hayward and his wife, Christie, of Stonington, Jared Hayward and his companion, Meaghan, of Surry, Samantha Betts of Seal Cove, and Jacob Betts of Anchorage, Alaska; nine grandchildren; a brother, Ronald Eaton of Stonington; a sister, Kathy Eaton-Gray and her husband, Robbie, of Deer Isle; one niece, Kassandra Gray; several aunts, uncles and cousins. He is also survived by his two beloved dogs, Lillie and Neeko. Friends may call 5-8 p.m. Thursday, April 1, at Bragdon-Kelley Funeral Home, 9 Thurlow’s Hill, Stonington. A graveside service for close friends and family will be celebrated 1 p.m. Saturday, April 3, at Evergreen Cemetery, Sunshine.
