FORT FAIRFIELD and PRESQUE ISLE – Joseph M. Solomon, 84, passed away unexpectedly Tuesday evening, March 30, 2010, at a Presque Isle health care facility. He was born Nov. 6, 1925, in Fort Fairfield, the son of George S. and Mary A. (Ayoob) Solomon. He was a graduate of the Fort Fairfield School System, was a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II, having served in the Pacific, and was self-employed as a potato broker for more than 40 years. Joseph was well respected as a businessman and took great pride in shipping quality potatoes to the market. He was always a sports enthusiast and was willing to donate his time and money to help promote local programs. He loved the New York Yankees and was not above chiding the local Red Sox fans. Anyone who knew Joe, knew that he could be quite a character. He was a communicant of Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, Fort Fairfield, and was a life member of Knights of Columbus, fourth degree, Council No. 1757, Fort Fairfield. He thoroughly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Joseph recently moved to Presque Isle from Brunswick, Ga. In addition to his parents, Mr. Solomon was predeceased by one daughter, Kathryn M. Solomon, Oct. 11, 2008. He is survived by his wife, Patricia (McLaughlin) Solomon of South Portland; two sons, George Solomon and his wife, Cindy, of Brunswick, Ga., and Mark Solomon of Portland; one daughter, Karen English of Old Orchard Beach; six grandchildren, Joseph Solomon of New Sweden, Amber Griffeth and Peter Solomon, both of Fort Fairfield, Jonathan Gorman of Old Orchard Beach, Margaret and Samuel Solomon, both of South Portland; four great-grandchildren, George and Phoebe Solomon, both of New Sweden, Blake Parady of Fort Fairfield and Kaiana Swan of Berwick; three sisters, Anna Marie Putnam of Limestone, Natalie Hackett of Seaford, Va., and Theresa Edgecomb of San Diego; several nieces and nephews. Friends may call 7-9 p.m. Friday, April 2, at Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield, where a vigil service will be conducted 7:30 p.m. The funeral service will be conducted 1 p.m. Saturday, April 3, at Parish of the Precious Blood, St. Denis Catholic Church, 147 Main St., Fort Fairfield, with the Rev. Aaron Damboise officiating. Interment will take place at a later date at St. Denis Catholic Cemetery, Fort Fairfield. A time of continued fellowship with refreshments will be held immediately after the funeral service at Knights of Columbus Hall, 260 Main St., Fort Fairfield.
