ADDISON – Horace I. Newcomb, 86, passed away April 3, 2010, at Narraguagus Bay Health Care Facility. He was born Nov. 29, 1923, in Winchester, Mass., the son of Horace and Hester (Fuller) Newcomb. Horace proudly served as a carpenter in the U.S. Navy aboard the USS-LST 223 in the Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged April 21, 1946. After returning home to Addison, he married Wilma Dorr and they lived happily on the Ridge Road, Addison, for 60 years. Horace worked off the land and water, digging clams and worms, picking brush and cutting wood. He was also a janitor at Narraguagus High School for several years prior to his retiring. After retirement he took care of the grounds at Narraguagus High School. He enjoyed spending many spring and summer hours in his beautiful vegetable gardens. Horace was a devoted husband, father, father-in-law, grandfather and great-grandfather. He was predeceased by his wife, Wilma (Dorr) Newcomb; an infant son, Thomas Carl Newcomb; his parents, Horace Sr. and Hester (Fuller) Newcomb; a brother, Robert Newcomb; and sister, Barbara (Newcomb) Wardwell. He is survived by a son, Paul Newcomb of Addison; one daughter, Lorna (Newcomb) Greene and her husband, Peter, of Addison; seven grandchildren, Amy (Newcomb) Griffith and her husband, Baxter, Adam Newcomb and his wife, Erin, Jason Greene and his wife, Karen, James Greene, Jeffrey Greene and his wife, Shelby, Kimberly (Greene) Taylor and her husband, Jeff, and Kristopher Greene; four great-grandchildren, Ryan and Sean Griffith, Andrew Greene and Jackson Newcomb; several nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be held 3:30 p.m. Tuesday, April 6, at Bragdon-Kelly Funeral Home, Main Street, Milbridge, with R. Michael Beal officiating. A private burial will afterward at Church on the Hill Cemetery, Addison.
