MILFORD – Louis J. “Joe” Roy Jr., 83, passed away April 7, 2010, at a Bangor health care facility. He was born April 5, 1927, the son of Louis Sr. and Alma E. (Rustin) Roy. Joe entered the Navy at 17 and he proudly served his country from 1945 to 1946. Upon his return he made his living as a sheet metal smith, and retired from James River in 1989. Joe was a member of American Legion Post No. 0084, Orono, and also volunteered his time for Milford Fire Department. Being a lover of the outdoors, Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing, four-wheeling and boating on the lakes and rivers of Maine. Ever the artisan, and being proud of his trade as a “tin-knocker,” one of the many creations Joe will be remembered for is the “tin man” sculpture he crafted in the late-1960s for many admirers to enjoy. Joe is survived by four children, Steven J. Roy and his wife, Jin, Sharon Roy Carter and her husband, M. Thomas, Stanley A. Roy, and Donna Bond and her husband, Roger; eight grandchildren, Kimberly J. Thomas of Rochester, N.H., Kirstie Y. Roy of Seattle, Katrina M. Brooks of Guilford, N.H., Casey J. Carter of Madison, Ala., Carissa A. Carter of Belfast, Curt D. Carter of Mojave, Calif., Joshua A. Bond of Kenduskeag and Jason M. Bond of Greenbush; six great-grandchildren, Makayla, Evan, Patrick, Allen, Andrew and Eleanor; and six siblings, Jane Copley, Avis Gilley, Paul Roy, Judy Roy, Marcia Osborne and Brenda Higgins. He is also survived by many special nieces, nephews, friends and neighbors. In addition to his parents, Joe was predeceased by his beloved wife, M. Lorraine (Curtis) Roy; two sons, Robert G. Roy and Dale R. Roy; two brothers and three sisters. The family expresses their gratitude to the staff and the medical caregivers at the Maine Veterans Home, Bangor, for all of the compassion and excellent care that was given to their father. Family and friends are invited to call 6-8 p.m. Sunday, April 11, at Birmingham Funeral Home, 438 Main St., Old Town, where a funeral service will be held 11 a.m. Monday, April 12, with the Rev.
