JONESPORT – Mary “Libby” Smith, 83, died April 13, 2010, at a Milbridge health care facility. She was born Jan. 21, 1927, in Masons Bay, Jonesport, the daughter of Ernest Sr. and Laura (White) Smith. Libby graduated from Jonesport High School in 1945, then graduated from Maine School of Commerce and Machias Teachers College with and Bachelor of Science degree in education. She taught school for 30 years and loved teaching in the third grade. Libby was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a telephone operator for Presque Isle, Ellsworth, Machias and Jonesport. She enjoyed reading, crafts, sewing, writing old time stories and she especially loved to dance. She is survived by three daughters, Stephanie Woodman of Bangor, Terrilyn Alley and her husband, Raymond, of Jonesport and Tammy Staples and her husband, Kevin, of Maryland; four grandchildren, Laura Woodman of Bangor, Matthew Alley and his wife, Katrina, of Jonesport, Christopher Alley and his fiancee, Tiffany, of Jonesboro and Kaitlyn Alley of Jonesport; two great-grandchildren, Kaydence and Kenton Alley of Jonesport; a sister, Myrna Reynolds of Scarborough; several nieces and nephews, including two special nieces, Linda Sue and Crockett; and two special nephews, Paul Anthony and Pearley Author and their families. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by a sister, Pauline Urquhart; a brother, Ernest Jr.; and two nephews, Stephen Look and Howie Smith. “Never disown your children, they didn’t ask to come, they need your love and devotion.” A memorial service will be celebrated 2 p.m. Saturday, April 24, at Sawyer Memorial Congregational Church, Jonesport.
