SKOWHEGAN – Valmond J. Dionne, 85, died April 17, 2010, at Redington Fairview General Hospital, Skowhegan. Valmond was born Aug. 26, 1924, in Madison, son of George and Delia (Cyr) Dionne. Valmond graduated from Madison High School in 1941. He worked at American Woolen Mill prior to his enlistment in the U.S. Marine Corps. He traveled to the Virgin Islands and Iwo Jima, Japan, where he served in the bomb disposal unit and was honorably discharged at the end of World War II. Valmond married Jeannette Poulin, Sept. 23, 1950, and they resided in Skowhegan for 53 years in their current home. He will be remembered for his love of gardening and the beautiful flowers and landscape at their home. Valmond owned and operated Dionne and Son Builders for more than 40 years, and along with his Uncle John, his brother, Leo and his son, Stephen, built many beautiful homes in the Skowhegan and central Maine areas. Valmond was a member of Veterans of Foreign Wars for more than 50 years. He also served on the Skowhegan School Board, was on the athletic committee and the building committee for more than 13 years, and was a member of Skowhegan History House Board of Directors. He donated a large amount of his time to restore the History House after the flood of 1987. Valmond was awarded a medal of appreciation for his efforts and generosity. Valmond loved spending time with his family and his many friends. He enjoyed fishing, traveling and watching sports. He was an avid reader and loved history. Valmond is survived by his wife of 59 years, Jeannette Dionne of Skowhegan; his son, Stephen Dionne and his wife, Jennifer Dionne; daughter, Valerie Dionne and her wife, Lisa Capizzo; daughter, Andrea Eames and her husband, Jonathan Eames; two sisters, Pauline Kimball and Claire Tracy; sisters-in-law, Pauline Porter and Angela Dionne; three grandchildren, Camden Dionne, Mathew Friedman and Megan Friedman; many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was predeceased by five brothers, Arthur, Paul, Albert, Patrick and Leo; and three sisters, Cecile, Alice and Theresa. The family thanks Health Reach Hospice and the employees at Redington Fairview Emergency Department. A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated 10 a.m. Thursday, April 29, at Notre Dame DeLourdes Catholic Church, Skowhegan, with Father John Mazzie, celebrant. Interment will be after the service at Calvary Cemetery, Skowhegan. At Valmond’s request, there will be no visitation hours. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in his memory to Skowhegan Free Public Library, 9 Elm St., Skowhegan, ME 04976.
