PENOBSCOT – Eleanor Kalenta Torti, 94, went to be with the Lord, April 27, 2010, at Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. She was born April 28, 1915, in Danbury, Conn., to John and Mary Kalenta. Eleanor graduated from Tottenville Staten Island High School. She then went on to nursing school and received her degree. She worked in various areas of nursing for 50 years. She has resided in Penobscot for the last 10 years under the loving care of a special nephew, Harold Butler and his wife, Jean Butler. She will be remembered for her love and talent of oil painting, enjoying the ocean, writing poetry and her swimming regiment she loved and swore by. All who loved and knew her appreciated her sense of humor and her devotion to help others in need, from the Red Cross to teaching the disabled to paint. Eleanor was predeceased by her husband, Vincent Torti; two brothers, John Kalenta and Albert Kalenta; and sisters, Julia Kalenta Butler, Alvena Shea, Marie Shwerd and Helen Alexander. A special thanks to Blue Hill Memorial Hospital staff for making her final days comfortable. At Eleanor’s request, she would like for no service to be held except for her family to celebrate her life. A summer celebration will be held at the Butler’s residence with family and friends. She would have wanted her loved ones to remember that she lived her life by the words of her favorite song “I did it my way.”
