EAST MACHIAS – Velma Lettie Harmon, 81, passed away May 3, 2010, at Maine Veterans Home, Machias. She was born May 21, 1928, in Danforth, the daughter of John and Hulda (Holmes) Ferguson. In her younger years, she worked in area fish factories, and then worked for many years in Dr. Karl Larson’s medical office. She loved playing Beano at the Veterans Home, knitting, crocheting, and attending family gatherings. She enjoyed attending Hope Bible Fellowship Church, Whiting, and had been a past member of Veterans of Foreign Wars Women’s Auxiliary. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband, Edwin James Harmon Sr., May 2, 1997; and two sons, Edwin James Harmon Jr. and Austin Carl. She is survived by three daughters, Ann Quimby and husband, Gerald, of East Machias, Lois Green and husband, Charles, of Orrington, and Donna Guptill and husband, William, of Hermon; eight grandchildren, Gerald, Troy, Shannon, Stacey, Matthew, Melissa, Kristina and Buddy; six great-grandchildren; a brother, Carlton of Newburgh; two sisters, Stella Porter and husband, Bernard, and Mary Stuart, both of Lubec; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Graveside services at Jacksonville Cemetery will be announced at a later date. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to make donations in her memory may do so to Maine Veterans Home Activity Fund, care of Kathy Chandler, 32 Veterans Way, Machias, ME 04654.
