CALAIS – Gerald Dwight Carter, 80, passed away peacefully Monday, May 3, 2010, with his loving family by his side at a Bangor hospital. Gerald was born March 14, 1930, in Presque Isle, son of the late Harvey and Hazel (Carvell) Carter. He graduated from Mapleton High School, Class of 1949, and furthered his education at Aroostook School of Commerce, where he studied business administration. Gerald entered the U.S. Navy serving his country during the Korean War. After the war, he returned to Mapleton where he worked on his family’s potato farm. Gerald relocated to Portsmouth, N.H., to start his career with Portsmouth Naval Shipyard. He retired in 1985 after 30 years of service. Gerald was a member of Princeton Rod & Gun Club and enjoyed canoeing, skiing, hunting, fishing, camping and gardening. Surviving are his loving wife of 58 years, Elaine (Ross) Carter; his two daughters, Ruth Haynes and her husband, Mark, of Jefferson, Mass., and Elizabeth Carter of Calais; a granddaughter, Diana Haynes of Boston; brother, Edwin Carter and his wife, Mary, of Vermont; sister-in-law, Helen Pollard of Barefoot Bay, Fla.; many nieces and nephews.
