GLENBURN – Dorothy May Thayer, 99, passed away May 10, 2010, at a local health care center. She was born March 27, 1911, in Hermon, the daughter of Granville and Ida (Bickford) Nowell. Dorothy was a longtime resident of Glenburn, was a graduate of Hermon schools, married Clyde A. Thayer and raised four children. She loved and cared for underprivileged children in her home. She was presented with a distinguished service award in grateful recognition of the time and support for the foster children from the Maine Department of Human Services. She faced many obstacles, but always managed to get through them. She enjoyed gardening and crocheting and was a longtime, faithful member of South Levant Baptist Church where she served in many capacities. She is survived by three daughters, Loraine Bryce, Phyllis McAvey and her husband, Kenneth, all of Hermon, and Ida Daigle of Kenduskeag; a foster son, Roger Kelley of Orono; many grandchildren, great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, Clyde A. Thayer; three sons, Fred, George and Milton; three sisters and one brother, Susie Shea, Vera Goggin, Beatrice Hatch and Clyde Nowell; a granddaughter, Sally Bryce; sons-in-law, John Bryce and John Daigle; daughter-in-law, Beverly Thayer; and a great-grandson, Sgt. Eric Ross. Dorothy’s family gratefully appreciates the service and care they received from Stillwater Health Care. A service honoring Dorothy’s life will be held 2 p.m. Thursday, May 13, at South Levant Baptist Church, Horseback Road, Levant, with Pastor Philip Bean, presiding. Family and friends may visit at the church immediately prior to the service. A time of fellowship will be immediately afterward in the church community room.
