BANGOR and ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – Rita Norton Salter died May 3, 2010, in St. Petersburg, Fla. She was born May 24, 1914, in Bangor, daughter of the late Patrick E. and Cora Budway Norton. Rita was educated in Bangor schools, graduated from John Bapst High School and Castine Normal School, and received her Bachelor of Science degree and master’s degree in education from the University of Maine, Orono. She taught school in Danforth for two years, where she met and married her husband, Stuart A. Salter. They moved to and resided in Presque Isle for 13 years. Returning to Bangor in 1950, Rita became active in PTA work at Fairmount School and Girl Scouts as a leader for several years, becoming president of the Bangor-Brewer Girl Scout Council. She returned to teaching at Fairmount School, Bangor, from 1956 to 1972. She was a lifelong member of St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Bangor, and since 1972 of Holy Family Catholic Church, St. Petersburg, Fla., where she resided until her death. She is survived by two daughters, Andrea Martin of Ipswich, Mass., and Kathleen Doliber of Seabrook, N.H.; four grandsons, Steven Haggett and his wife, Lisa, of Pensacola, Fla., Scott Haggett and his wife, Vicky, of Exeter, N.H., Adam Doliber and his wife, Jennifer, of Danvers, Mass., and Donald Martin Jr. of Ipswich, Mass.; four great-grandchildren, Corey Haggett and his wife, Lauren, and Craig Haggett, all of Pensacola, Fla., Kyle Haggett of Exeter, N.H., and Tyler Doliber of Danvers, Mass.; several nephews, nieces, great-nephews and great-nieces. After cremation a graveside service will be held 11 a.m. Friday, June 11, at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bangor. Arrangements by Kiley & Foley Funeral Service, 299 Union St., Bangor.
